‘Sister Wives’ Season 20 Episode 12 Recap: Pumping Iron & Pressuring an Ex for Forgiveness

Me, every time I think about the fact that I’ll never have to know what it’s like to be married to this man…

Throw on your trusty apology-tour sport coat and guard your good kidney– it’s time for another episode of Sister Wives!

Much like my nightmares, this episode kicks off at Kody and Robyn’s Mountain Mansion, where Kody is geared up in a weighted backpack and getting his workout on.

In between sporadic mountain-side sprints, Kody tells viewers it’s important for him to focus on his fitness in order to keep up with his shy and pretty wife Robyn, who happens to be more than a decade younger than him. Kody claims he doesn’t want to be the “old man in the family”– despite literally being the oldest man in his family– so after his run, he heads inside to lift some weights and bust out some pull-ups.

Balding maniac or daytime burglar, we’ll let you decide.

As Kody gets his sweat on in (one of) the cluttered Mountain Mansion garages, Robyn shuffles inside and is forced to stroke Kody’s ego as he struggles through a few more pull-ups. Robyn looks as if she’s seriously regretting her life choices as she watches her man grunt his way up the pull-up bar.

“That’s rilly great, Kody, but I just came in here to grab my box of seasonal doll clothes…”

The producers push Kody’s wives– past and present– to talk about the father of 18’s workout habits. (Seriously, MUST WE?!)

Robyn insists to viewers that Kody’s (allegedly) rockin’ bod is just “icing on the cake,” as she rilly really values “who he is as a person.” In fact, Robyn says the main thing that makes her go “rawr” with Kody is seeing him be a good dad.

Um…is the “Good Dad” in the hoard-filled garage with us or…?

Once Kody stops showing off for the cameras, he begins to give Robyn a recap of his recent meetup with Janelle. Kody tells Robyn that Stop 1 on his ex-wife apology tour went well and that Janelle was “easygoing” and “kind” about the whole thing. Kody says he’s glad he decided to make things right with Janelle, though he acknowledges that his apology to Christine may not go as smoothly– something Robyn also suspects.

“She could at least be nice to him. After all she did ruin EVERYONE’s life by leaving!”

Kody says he fears that Christine won’t take his apology seriously, insisting that for him, making peace with his former spouses on-camera is a “very serious” thing. He also admits that he’s hoping Christine will show him and his still-wounded kidney a little “tenderness,” though he says he’s prepared for “a very different experience.”

Next we head to Parowan, where Meri and some friends are planning a fundraising event for Jenn’s husband, Shawn, whom Meri reveals has been battling cancer for two years. While Jenn tells viewers that having people do things for her is one of her least-favorite things, Meri says that Jenn has been there for her for the last 14 years and she deserves that same support in return.

Because Jenn and Shawn own a bicycle shop in town, Meri & Co. have planned a short bike ride followed by breakfast at Meri’s B&B. While sharing the fundraiser details with viewers, Meri reveals that her speed-dating pal Ron will also be attending the fundraiser, as the two have been casually spending time together, without the looming presence of a TLC camera crew.

Wait…is that even allowed?

While the fundraising event for Shawn marks the first time that Ron will be traveling to Parowan to visit Meri, Meri insists that the two are just hanging out and haven’t put a label on anything yet.

…other than Meri’s ‘Worthy Up’ label, that is.

On the day of the fundraiser, Ron rolls up wearing his matching yellow event tee and he and Meri exchange an awkward side-hug and some awkward small talk. After a riveting conversation on bicycle safety, Meri and the rest of the group hop onto their bikes and begin to ride towards the breakfast after-party at Meri’s B&B.

“I know you’re down with coordinating outfits, but what are your thoughts on matching Claddagh rings?”

Once the ride is over, Meri and her friends begin preparing breakfast for the masses and Ron is quick to volunteer his services at the egg station. Meri says it’s a “good sign of a good person” when someone can “pitch in like that.”

“I’m basically taking on the role that Kody had throughout most of our marriage.”

While Ron fails to fry the eggs at the fundraiser to Meri’s liking, Meri manages to keep her cool and even tells Ron she thinks it’s “cute” that he can’t properly crack or fry an egg. Likewise, Ron politely stands by as Meri and her friends fixate on the food “fiasco” instead of hopping onto his rented bicycle and hauling ass to his hotel, as we suspect he considered doing.

As the event wraps up, Jenn’s husband Shawn makes an appearance and tells viewers how much Meri means to him and his family and Jenn gives Ron her stamp of approval (again).

Next we head over to North Carolina, where Janelle is having breakfast with her friends Angela and Kristina, who just happen to be in town for a visit. Before spilling the tea on her recent chat with Kody, Janelle tells viewers that the interaction with her frizzy-haired former spouse left her a bit rattled due to how “intense” it was.

“…and I’m not just talking about the hair loss he’s experienced since the last time I saw him.”

Back at breakfast, Janelle’s friends are eager to find out what she wore to receive Kody’s performative apology and just as eager to make their predictions on what Kody showed up wearing.

No notes.

Janelle reveals over breakfast that she only planned to give Kody about 10 minutes to say his piece before she peaced out, but that she ended up staying for about an hour and a half. She also tells her friends that when she agreed to meet with Kody, she told him verbatim that he couldn’t bring Robyn along, as anything they had to discuss had nothing to do with her or her rilly hurt fillings.

Janelle tells her friends that it took her a while to “decompress” after the meeting with Kody, despite Kody’s apology feeling genuine. While Janelle certainly seemed enamored with Kody during their conversation, she assures her friends that she has no interest in rekindling their romantic relationship, though she does admit that the idea briefly crossed her mind. She says it also briefly crossed her mind to mention to Kody that he remains on the outs with the majority of his children, but she opted not to bring that up in the moment.

Despite what can only be described as Janelle’s blip of temporary insanity where she actually considered the idea of reuniting with Kody, the mom of six confirms that she moving forward with getting a spiritual release from The Curled One through the family’s former church.

As Janelle prepares to sever the remaining tie between herself and Kody, Christine and David gear up for their own face-to-face with Kody, which is taking place in Las Vegas– unfortunately NOT at the Brown’s former mini compound, aka the Cul-de-sac of Broken Dreams.

“It’s a real shame we were forced to move away. Oh, wait…”

While getting primped to collect her “olive branch” from Kody, Christine admits that she’s nervous to talk to her ex and frustrated with herself for allowing the situation to intimidate her. David attempts to calm Christine’s nerves by assuring her that if the conversation with Kody does happen to go south, things will still be OK.

Raise your hand if you are willing to give your wife’s ex the ol’ One-Two Punch in the kidneys….

Meanwhile, Kody tells viewers he’s there to apology to Christine and to get to know David, whom he claims has talked about him behind his back.

“…and if you DID, you’d realize that I’m actually much worse than what you’ve heard.”

Kody also takes a moment to remind everyone just how much “hurt” there’s been in the family and how he’s “guilty of so much of it”– but not ALL of it. He then claims that he just wants to “wash” all of the past away and move forward.

After Kody tells viewers he’s unsure how his “wildcard” ex-wife Christine will react to his apology, Christine pays her petty former spouse a compliment, recalling how he was such a great dad to his kids back in the day. After reflecting on the fond memories of when her children actually had a present father in their lives, Christine acknowledges that Kody “changed” at some point for some unknown reason.

The reason…

Christine and David are the first to arrive at the meetup, which they’re surprised to find out is taking place in a private dining room at a table that’s ironically large enough to accommodate the entire Brown family.

“I swear, if Kody secretly invited Robyn and her collectable dolls to this dinner, I’m out.”

Before long, Kody– who tells viewers he invited David to tag along to this meetup out of “respect” for his marriage to Christine– makes his fashionably late entrance to the boardroom dining room and proceeds to greet both Christine and David with a hug. After sitting down, Kody jokingly tells the couple to “suck those beers down,” claiming he has “some fun stuff” to discuss with them.

“OK, but hurry up and order your hot lemon water so I can toss it in your face if this gets out of hand.”

When Christine asks Kody why he wanted to meet with her (and David), Kody rattles off his unofficial apology tour tagline about wanting to “apologize with all my heart.” Kody goes on to admit (some) fault in the way he and Christine broke up, as well as how he reacted to it, though he says he’s also there to “acknowledge the good times” they shared.

“I’m pretty certain we had at least a handful of those, right? Like, how about when little Trudy was born. I was there…after I made out with Robyn obvs…”

As Christine and David sit across from Kody seemingly stunned– either by Kody taking an ounce of accountability for his actions or by the current state of his hairline– Kody insists that he just wants Christine to “heal” and move forward.

Sure, Jan… and this has absolutely nothing to do with him doing whatever it takes to get that next paycheck…even if it means apologizing to that wretched Christine! (Hey, Robyn’s Amazon Prime bill is not cheap!)

Christine finally tells Kody that everything they went through is “in the past” and that she’s already let it go– hence the new husband she has sitting less than two feet away from her. Still, Kody notes that “an apology doesn’t hurt.”

What does hurt, according to Kody, are some of the comments he made about his exes following their respective splits, particularly him claiming that he never loved his first three wives. As he did during his apology to Janelle, Kody assures Christine that his comments came from a place of anger. In response, Christine tells viewers she finds it “weird” that Kody is talking about his past feelings for her in front of her new husband, noting that David has to feel some sort of way about the direction this conversation has taken.

Kody also “jokes” at the table that if he hadn’t run his marriage to Christine into the ground, Christine would’ve never found happiness with David– a remark he delivers as if he’s waiting for the happy couple to give him any and all credit for their wedded bliss.

“If you’re looking for a way to formally thank me for my service, I’ve got my eye on a nifty visor in the hotel gift shop.”

That’s all for this episode!
