The ’90s are totally back!
Following in the success of the Emmy-nominated A Very Brady Makeover, HGTV announced yesterday the debut of Totally ’90s House on Wednesday, Aug. 26, at 9 p.m. ET/PT. The competition/home makeover show will feature some of our favorite ’90s television stars — Brian Austin Green from Beverly Hills, 90210, Beverley Mitchell from 7th Heaven, Jodie Sweetin from Full House, Melissa Joan Hart from Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Matthew Lawrence from Boy Meets World and Keshia Knight Pulliam from The Cosby Show.
“A true blast from the past, the six-episode renovation competition, hosted by actor, producer and game show host Jaleel White (Family Matters), will follow two celeb teams as they scour the country for houses stuck in the 1990s — think honey oak cabinets, sponge-painted walls and mirrored closets — with each team ultimately picking their perfect throwback in need of a major overhaul,” the network shared in a press release.
The two teams will be mentored by HGTV stars Sabrina Soto and Carter Oosterhouse as they attempt to both modernize the dated spaces and retain each home’s nostalgic charm, all for the chance to win $25,000 for charity.

“Everybody loves the ’90s again,” host Jaleel said in the HGTV press release. “The fits are back, the playlists are on repeat, and kids who weren’t even born yet are binge-watching the shows we made famous. But while some things from the ’90s are timeless … some of y’all never got the memo that the decade ended. We asked America to show us the homes still living in the past, and the response was incredible. Now it’s time for the ultimate throwback transformation. Get ready for the biggest ‘90s house battle ever.”
The show’s first episode will find the cast exploring some of America’s most-’90s properties. In the second episode, the teams will receive a VHS message from Jaleel detailing their first challenge, a kitchen makeover that will be judged by HGTV star Vern Yip. Other HGTV favorites will appear throughout the series, including Drew Lachey and Paige Davis. Designer Jonathan Adler will appear in the finale to crown the champions.
Beverley mentioned another special guest in a Reel about the show.
“OK guys, we have big news, huge news,” she said. “I am so thrilled that HGTV finally announced our new show, ‘Totally ’90s House.’ It’s me, it’s Jodie Sweeten, Brian Austin Green, we are one team, and then we’ve got another team. We’ve got Matthew Lawrenece, we have got Melissa Joan Hart, Keshia Knight Pulliam, and Joey Lawrence, and we are battling it out to find the most ’90s house that we can bring into this decade, it is going to be crazy, and let’s not forget that we have incredible mentors, we’ve got Sabrina Soto and Carter Oosterhouse, and then Jaleel White is our host that is just keeping us on our toes. This show is so much fun, it was a dream come true, I’m literally pinching myself and so excited that I can scream from the mountaintops and I cannot wait for you guys to watch ‘Totally ’90s House,’ it is going to be amazing.”
HGTV’s Instagram post announcing the show’s upcoming debut gathered enthusiastic comments from ’90s TV fans and stars alike. Famous names weighing in included Danielle Fishel, who starred with Matthew on the ‘Boy Meets World,’ Candace Cameron Bure, Jodie’s ‘Full House’ and ‘Fuller House’ big sister, Darius McCrary, who starred with Jaleel on ‘Family Matters,’ and Elise Donovan, who starred with Melissa on ‘Sabrina the Teenage Witch’ and had a guest arc with Brian on ‘Beverly Hills, 90210.’
One commenter pointed out the long histories many of the ‘Totally ’90s House’ competitors share.
“Looking forward to this!!!” the fan wrote. “And the inside baseball is crazy here – Brian Austin Green and Jaleel White were in the ‘Good Morning, Miss Bliss’ pilot that eventually became ‘Saved by the Bell’. Jodie Sweetin and Beverley Mitchell were two of the ‘Hollywood Darlings’ alongside Christine Lakin. Melissa Joan Hart worked with Matthew Lawrence’s brother Joey on ‘Melissa & Joey’. Keshia Knight Pulliam replaced Jaleel White as Rudy on ‘The Cosby Show’. Probably some more connections that I don’t know of but this is an iconic assembly. ’90s forever!”
In addition to ‘Totally ‘90s House,’ HGTV is also launching a YouTube series in late August that will take viewers inside the homes of some of their favorite ‘90s celebrities. On the web series, which currently has the working title HGTV’s House Call: ‘90s Edition, the stars will be matched with a do-it-yourself expert who will help them tackle a home project.
‘Totally ’90s House’ debuts Aug. 26 on HGTV and will stream the next day on HBO Max.
