Sister Wives fans got to witness the moment where Christine Brown‘s past came face-to-face with her future, and it was… awkward.

On Sunday’s episode of the TLC reality show, Christine’s new beau David Woolley met her ex-husband Kody Brown (and his only remaining wife, Robyn), and it was a moment everyone— Brown Family included!— was waiting for.

“I know everybody was starin’ at us!” Robyn told the cameras about the moment they met Christine’s new man.

At an engagement party for Christine and Kody’s daughter Gwendlyn, Christine introduces David— whom, at that time, she had been dating for about two months— to her ex-husband and Robyn.

During the episode, David comes over and shakes hands with Kody (who had his best fake “I hope everyone has a nice Thanksgiving”-esque smile plastered on his face).

The awkwardness of the moment increases once Kody and Christine’s daughter Mykelti soon reveals that David has already babysat her newborn twins on his own. Kody manages to utter a surprised “Wow,” while Robyn gives Kody a telling glance. 

In a confessional, David mentions that Kody got “really red in the face” when he found out that David had babysat his grandsons before he had. Kody, however, noticed that David seemed to be avoiding talking directly to him.

“What was interesting is that David made more eye contact with Robyn and talked to Robyn way more than me,” Kody said.

While Robyn tries to act nonchalant as David talks about his kids and grandkids, Kody appears to be stunned that Mykelti has let Christine’s new boyfriend play “grandpa” to his grandsons.

Kody tells the cameras later that he “didn’t know what to expect” when he met David.

“Robyn said, ‘What if he’s just a good-looking hunk?'” Kody said. “I mean, [Christine] gets whoever she chooses!” 

Kody says that he wasn’t aware that David would be attending the engagement party until the day of the party.

“One of my other kids just tells me, ‘Hey Dad, Mom’s new boyfriend is going to be there,'” he said. “Well, good to know! I tell Robyn, good to know.”

Christine told the cameras that she was “mad” and “frustrated” that Kody had decided to come to the engagement party, because she suspected that him meeting David would overshadow Gwendlyn’s day with her fiancé, Bea.

“So much of the focus now is going to be on Kody and Robyn until they show up,” Christine said. “It adds on such a level of complication that is so ridiculous.”

Kody later stated that he wasn’t bothered by seeing Christine being so cozy with David. He also picked up on the fact that David was “not just a boyfriend” and that Christine and David have “something more.”

(As ‘Sister Wives’ fans know, Christine and David would go on to get married in October 2023.) 

“If she gets married next week, it’s none of my business,” he added. “I hope it works out for her.” 

Back in 2023, Christine gave an interview about how she felt the meeting of David and Kody went.

“You just hope that it’s going to be OK, but it worked out to be all right,” Christine said. “I feel like ‘OK’ is the best way to put it. It’s going to be OK because we’re all adults and we’re all responsible. We’re all people that have raised our kids together. So, it’s going to be [OK] because it needs to be…You’ll see them meet, and– you know what?— they’re going to be cordial. I was so nervous, for no reason…it was interesting watching both of them…it’s good. My past is good. My future is better, but my past is good, too.”

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight last month, David and Christine spoke about him meeting Kody and Robyn at the party, and David confirmed that he’s very different from Christine’s ex— and not just because he doesn’t sport the same “it-looks-like-he-has-curly-fries-on-his-head” hair that David does.

“No, no,” David said when asked if he had much in common with Kody.

Christine then delivered another (verbal) knife-in-the-kidneys to the Kod-ster.

“[David] wears actual underwear, not big boy panties!” she said. “Like, real underwear.”

(This is, of course, a nod to something Kody and Robyn said way back in 2013 during Season 6 when Robyn told him to put on his “big boy panties” and deal with not getting his way. Earlier this season, Kody again referenced having to put on his “big boy panties” and power through his divorce heartbreak.)

Anyway, David stated that he wasn’t nervous to meet Christine’s ex-husband.

“I don’t get nervous at all,” David told ET. “I’m not intimidated by people. It doesn’t bother me at all.”
