Erin Bates’ Husband Shares Positive Update on ‘Bringing Up Bates’ Star’s Condition Following Her Postnatal Seizure & Septic Shock

Erin Bates has shown signs of recovery, days after suffering a “lengthy and severe seizure” as well as septic shock following the birth of her seventh child.

On Saturday, Chad Paine— the husband of the Bringing Up Bates star— provided another update on Erin, who has been in the Intensive Care Unit for over five days “extremely weak and half conscious.” Chad posted a video of Erin laying in her hospital bed kissing her newborn baby, Henry (who has been in the NICU since his August 25 birth).

“With tears in our eyes, we are praising the Lord that we are on the road to recovery,” Chad wrote. “Your prayers have definitely touched heaven.”

Erin first went to the ICU after giving birth to Henry after she developed a severe UTI and kidney infection. The infections put Erin into septic shock. Although Chad told fans that Erin had been getting better, she suffered a severe seizure on Wednesday night, causing Chad to write that he and Erin’s family were “back in a place of heartache, uncertainty and tears” regarding Erin’s prognosis.

Chad’s update was much-more positive than his previous posts about Erin; however, it appears that the ‘Bringing Up Bates’ star is still in fragile health. According to an update given on Sunday morning by Erin’s pastor, she is still not able to move one of her legs.

The pastor, who apparently visited Erin in the hospital on Saturday, also gave more details about the very serious seizure Erin had on Wednesday.

“She’s very, very weak, but she has use of both her hands and she’s able to talk,” he said. “Yesterday afternoon, she seemed better than we’d seen her in days. But she has one leg that will not work.”

The pastor went on to reveal that the seizure Erin had was a grand mal seizure that caused her to seize for 15 minutes.

“Four people [were] holding her down, but you know, when you see her in the hospital, she has a glow about her still,” he said.

In the video posted on Saturday, Erin is not opening her eyes but is conscious and snuggling baby Henry, who, at one point in the video, smiles when his mother kisses him.

“Two miracles laying in that bed! So thankful to God!” Erin’s parents, Gil and Kelly Jo Bates, wrote in the comment section of the post.

“Bawling! The sweetest video, praising the Lord for answered prayers!” wrote Erin’s sister Josie Bates Balka. “We’re continuing to lift you up in prayer as you recover. Love you guys so much!”

“His little smile has me tearing up,” wrote Katie Bates Clark. “So thankful for answered prayers.”

Some of the Duggar girls— who grew up with the Bates family— also provided well wishes to Erin.

“Praise the Lord! Been thinking about y’all and praying for you!” wrote Jill Duggar Dillard.

Erin’s sister Michaela had been in Florida— where Erin and her family reside– helping to care for Henry in the NICU while Erin and Chad were unable to. On Saturday, Erin’s brother Lawson Bates posted on social media that he and his family were heading to Florida to be with Erin and her family.

“Caught the red-eye to Florida,” he wrote. “Please say a prayer for my sister Erin!”

Erin in the third-eldest of Gil and Kelly Jo’s 19 children. She appeared on both of the Bates’ Family’s reality shows— ‘Bringing Up Bates’ and United Bates of America. In addition to Henry, Erin and Chad are the parents of six other children– Charles, Brooklyn, Everly, Holland, Finley and William.

Erin has struggled with her health for years. Before her first son, Charles, was born in 2015, Erin suffered three miscarriages, which she has said were likely due to a blood clotting disorder she has. In 2019, Erin and Chad spoke to People after being told Erin’s health issues may prevent them from having any more children after their fourth-born, Holland.

“After consulting with our doctor, we realized having another baby was not going to be in our future. It was sad, just because we both really love kids, but I knew Erin’s health was the biggest priority, and we were overwhelmingly grateful for the four little blessings God has already given us,” Chad said at the time. “We were content knowing that God sometimes has a different plan than our own.”

In 2021, Erin had multiple surgeries due to ruptured cysts, resulting in her having one of her ovaries fully removed, and the other partially removed.

Despite her health issues, the ‘Bringing Up Bates’ star went on to have three more babies after Holland at a very fast pace. Daughter Finley was born in January 2022. Less than two years later, Erin and Chad welcomed son William (prematurely) in October 2023. Less than 22 months later, they welcomed their newest son Henry.

  1. I’m very interested in the comment of about “four people holding her down”. You don’t restrain someone during a seizure. This is seizure 101 (aside from “don’t put anything in the mouth). You keep them from hitting their head if necessary but otherwise leave them alone.

The only reason that would remotely make any kind of sense was if she’d refused to have an IV inserted earlier and she needed to have a leg held still briefly to establish IO access (basically an IV drilled into usually the shin bone as an alternative to an IV in an emergency, mostly an ambulance crew thing), but that takes literally a minute.

Either massive malpractice or your basic “game of telephone with a string of people who aren’t listening”.

        1. I’m curious as to the source on a “severe seizure” requiring “A LOT of restraining”, as I’ve never seen that (always explicitly the opposite) and can’t find anything saying to do even when looking for it (Epilepsy Society, Mayo Clinic, etc.)

Restraining someone neither shortens the seizure duration nor stops the convulsions. If anything a more severe seizure would present a greater risk for injury if the person were restrained.

          1. You’re wrong. As a sister to an epileptic I can assure you that when a seizure is “severe” it is best to hold them down until it passes to limit injury to the person having the seizure AND those around them

      1. I know pregnancy is a UTI risk but how do you know this pregnancy caused her UTI? There is no physical evidence saying that it was. As a long time follower of this family I will have you know that 1, she has struggled with UTIs since childhood and 2, she had this particular UTI 3 months ago so contrary to what the article says she did not just magically contract it after giving birth.

And another thing, I have been noticing that people are saying that drs told Erin not to get pregnant and thats BULLCRAP…she has a blood clotting disorder and was told that whenever she was pregnant she had to get a Heprin shot in her belly daily…Carlin has this same issue and I firmly believe Michaela does to and that’s why she’s having fertility issues.

        1. She has a very long history of kidney issues, although it’s only one of her countless health issues. She has known about her kidney problems since before she had Charles (their first son). She also knew that any pregnancy, but certainly back to back ones, could exacerbate her pre-existing and well documented health problems, including kidney issues. Anyone who has kidney issues is already at least slightly more susceptible to UTIs and various different infections (her even more so). Her blood clotting disorder is one contributing factor to her multiple miscarriages and the premature delivery of one baby. It’s only one of the many issues she has. She’s talked about her health problems for years. This particular issue was both a kidney infection AND a UTI-it’s documented that this is what happened, both of which can easily go septic even in an otherwise healthy person. She is NOT a healthy person!

Each issue on its own is already a problem, but combined, it’s a recipe for disaster. It’s almost killed her multiple times and has taken the life (I know, it sounds terrible, and I hate it too, but it’s true and can’t be ignored) of some of her babies, while nearly taking the life of her and a premature baby as well. Yes, she was told, more than once, by doctors that getting pregnant puts her and any unborn babies at serious risk. They have both said they were told this by multiple doctors. It’s why they “chose” to have babies back to back so she could have them all quickly, and I quote “before she can’t have any more”.

          1. If drs aka so-called experts knew anything along of people (including myself) would be dead right now, ill be 38 in a little over 2 weeks and wasn’t supposed to live past 8

    1. My guess is that it’s because her fame/notoriety is tied up in being “a Bates” and she’s less recognizable to most under her married name.

  2. I hope to the moon n back that she continues her recovery with no set backs, and that they ensure this woman *never* gets pregnant again so that she can be a loving present mother for her existing children.

Different scenario, but it somewhat reminds me of when I read the whole story around Andrea Yates, how they were told repeatedly NOT to have more children, that Andrea was ill and in danger, and all the medical warnings they ignored in their quest to have more children than they can even spend quality time with because God told them to do so.

    1. I said the same exact thing. Everyone failed her and those children. Her husband and religious leader are 100 percent to blame for that horrible tragedy. They took her off Haldol. Which is a serious med.

    2. Let’s be clear about something. The doctor NEVER told them that they were never to get pregnant again. They were told that her chances of getting pregnant again would be slim due to the fact that she only had a third of an overly left. Though extremely saddened by that, they chose to allow God to determine whether they would add to their family. I am certain had they been told NOT to have any more, they would have abided by that reality but THAT WAS NOT THE SITUATION. HOWEVER, I would like to believe, under the current situation, they may rethink their plans but the decision is ultimately between them and God. I DON’T think it would be in the best interest of their family to move ahead with another pregnancy but I am not them. ♥️

      1. Let’s be clear that they have both said they were told that any subsequent pregnancies would put her and any unborn babies at risk of serious harm, or worse. They have said they were told (even the husband has said this in interviews) that they should *not* have more children. God has been telling them and sending them signs for years that this isn’t healthy, this isn’t smart, this isn’t the path they should choose. How many more signs does god need to send?

They lost three babies, she has nearly died multiple times, they had one baby born premature who also almost died. It sounds crass to point out the morbidity of it all, but, its just the harsh truth and shouldn’t be glossed over, it’s quite serious.

I can’t stand when people say “leave it in god’s hands” in cases like this. God said “I gave you the tools and the ability to use them…. so do it”. Ever hear the story of the man stuck in a flood who was sent help numerous times and still said “I’ll wait for god to help me”. He died, and when he got to heaven he said “I waited for you, and you never came”. God said “I sent you the help, I don’t know why you refused”. I am paraphrasing and totally shortened that, but if you want to use religion as a basis for things, you also have to be logical about it as well. If you have faith in god, or a deity of any sort, then you ought to have faith in the tools he (or whatever) gives you as well.

  3. I wish them the best of luck. If they are going to keep having kids, I hope she takes care of herself and doesn’t into any major health problems doing.
