Over a month after she went into septic shock and had a grand mal seizure following the birth of her seventh child, Erin Bates Paine is adjusting to her new normal, despite still not having use of one of her legs.
The Bringing Up Bates star recently updated her fans on her current condition which, unfortunately, includes a paralyzed leg. She informed her fans— who have been following along through Erin’s post-partum ICU stay and health crisis— that she is now using a walker and wheelchair to help her get around.
“To answer many of your questions…My leg still isn’t functioning, but I am learning how to navigate using a walker and wheelchair much better now,” Erin wrote on Instagram on Friday. “I’ve been doing physical therapy consistently and they are hopeful that time will heal!”
“Thank you for praying!” Erin replied to someone in the comment section of her previous Instagram post. “We are still hopeful that I’ll regain function in my leg… I started physical therapy. I’m so grateful to be home!”
As The Ashley previously reported, Erin first went into the ICU after developing a severe UTI and kidney infection after her seventh child Henry’s birth. The infections put Erin into septic shock and caused her to suffer a lengthy and severe seizure. According to an update given by Erin’s pastor at the time, the seizure she suffered was a 15-minute-long grand mal seizure. After extended stays in the ICU and NICU, respectively, both Erin and Henry were sent home.
Last week, Erin’s husband Chad Paine posted a YouTube video giving fans more information about Erin’s current condition.
“Erin still has complications,” Chad said. “She cannot use her right leg for some reason. The doctors don’t have an explanation. They don’t have an answer, and they are only hopeful on recovery. They’re positive towards it, but they still haven’t really identified the problems that have been frustrating, but we’ve been continuing to ask for prayer.”
Erin’s brother Lawson Bates also posted a video this week to YouTube with footage from when he and his family visited Erin in the hospital earlier this month. He explained what was going on with Erin’s leg.
“We are praying for total healing,” Lawson said in his video. “It’s going to happen by God’s grace…if something’s not working, there’s got to be a reason. Her right leg is almost like it’s dead. She cannot move it.”
Erin’s post also gave an update on her baby, Henry, who turned one-month-old on Friday and appears to be thriving following his stay in the NICU.
“One month of loving you and thanking God for His goodness EVERY. SINGLE. DAY,” Erin wrote, before joking that she was “celebrating that I made it out of pajamas” to take the photos with Henry and Chad. “But only for two minutes before the PJ life called me back. It’s the little things, friends!”
Erin has struggled with her health for years. Before her first son, Charles, was born in 2015, Erin suffered three miscarriages, which she has said were likely due to a blood clotting disorder she has. In 2019, Erin and Chad spoke to People after being told Erin’s health issues may prevent them from having any more children after their fourth-born, Holland.
“After consulting with our doctor, we realized having another baby was not going to be in our future. It was sad, just because we both really love kids, but I knew Erin’s health was the biggest priority, and we were overwhelmingly grateful for the four little blessings God has already given us,” Chad said at the time. “We were content knowing that God sometimes has a different plan than our own.”
In 2021, Erin had multiple surgeries due to ruptured cysts, resulting in her having one of her ovaries fully removed, and the other partially removed. Despite her health issues, the ‘Bringing Up Bates’ star went on to have three more babies after Holland at a very fast pace. Daughter Finley was born in January 2022. Less than two years later, Erin and Chad welcomed son William (prematurely) in October 2023. Less than 22 months later, they welcomed Henry.

Unfortunately, they do not believe in birth control so I’m sure he will knock her up again. They say, “we want as many children as God will give us.” No, you have that many kids because you don’t use birth control. I get it, they have their beliefs about not using birth control, however, this is an exception. Infections, seizure, septic and paralyzed should be enough for these boneheads to be like, Erin almost lost her life so we need to stop having kids. For God’s sake, she was knocking on death’s door.
Even in the Catholic church that is anti-birth control they deem it okay to take if its for MEDICAL reasons/purposes.
These are the kind of yahoos that will continue getting pregnant against medical advice, but then whine and blame the doctors when said pregnancy leads to problems. It’s all God’s will until Gods will is for her to not have a functioning leg. Then it’s someone else’s fault (usually the doctor or, of course, satan)
They missed something on the MRI.she most likely has an ABI. However healing id 100% possible l. Im technically paralyzed in my left limbs. But I can walk on my own and ive learned how to make use of my left arm/hand. they should do more imaging on the left side of her brain.
As long as they can afford it and they don’t rely on welfare, why should anyone have a problem with them having as many kids as they like. It’s not as unusual as you think and it was normal once upon a time to have big families.
You really think they don’t rely on welfare? lol you must not be aware of the fundie Christian way!
There’s reasons why big families were the norm many years ago. First off, there was no birth control until really the 60s and 70s and before that sex education was non existent. Women had no idea how their bodies worked, nor had the rights to decide for themselves. Women were literally treated as birthers and that’s it. The only plus side to these big families was the help you could count on around the farm or raising the siblings. It was not a glorified life and that should be pretty evident since women have done everything they can to change living like that. And to the point about them having more if they can afford it, why do people think money is what you need? Kids need more than money. They need love and attention as well and 7 plus kids aren’t getting that. People are worried for Erin because her husband doesn’t seem to care about her health.
Because she has been warned by trained medical professionals multiple times that it is UNSAFE to her health to get pregnant. She almost died from this birth and has had complications with her two previous pregnancies. Going against medical advice in This way is reckless, idiotic and only serves as a way to ensure her children will end up motherless if she decides to continue having children when she has been TOLD multiple times she shouldn’t. These fundies are wild.
They put it out there for the public to see/know, so it stops being “nobody else’s business” the moment you do that. More importantly than this though is that these children didn’t ask to be brought into this world. They didn’t conceive themselves and they didn’t ask for these two, clearly ignorant, yahoos to be their parents. When you CHOOSE to have children, you and your needs stop being the main priority. If they do not, you are not fit to be a parent, full stop.
The children they do have deserve to have their mother with them, not a dead mommy. It sounds crass, but her odds of dying or having life threatening effects due to pregnancy and/or childbirth are more than 99% now. They were already over 90% before she got pregnant with the last three. Who in their right mind would EVER think betting on those odds, and risking their children being motherless is a good idea? Only selfish people think of their needs and desires over those of their children. You know a couple of really good options for people who cannot have biological children are?
Fostering or adoption are the absolutely best case scenario options here, and quite viable for them. At least this way you’re not barely teetering on the edge of life and death, nor are you killing/harming your unborn children because you chose to ignore medical advice for years. Again, it sounds crass, but it’s just the hard truth. Her miscarriages and her preterm labor and birth all have a KNOWN CAUSE, they aren’t just “sometimes bad shit happens to good people”. They know exactly what caused them, they just don’t care. It’s ignorant and arrogant af, doesn’t matter who you are. They want the public opinion, they put it out there. Most of the educated public (those that know about them, lol which likely isn’t a ton of people) think they’re selfish assholes.
A lot of fundies rely on welfare while voting to deny it to other people who actually need it because of circumstances beyond their control, while fundies have a choice to stop reproducing but don’t. They make their business public. Maybe some of us don’t like thinking about children who will eventually be without a mother because their parents are too selfish to stop having children? Seeing as your screen name doesn’t ring a bell for this site and the Bates have a narcissistic habit of stalking anti fundie and Bates subreddits I can’t help but wonder…? 🤔 Were you disappointed that this site doesn’t have a report button you can abuse like they do on reddit
I just wish for these two to see this as a warning. That is all.
I became a paraplegic when my first child was born. That’s always a risk.
He says her health is their number one priority, than goes on to get her pregnant 3 more times…
She wasn’t told not to have more she was told that with only half an ovary the chances of having more kids was slim to none.
Doctors told her more pregnancies were a risk for her life. Both of them stated that but nonetheless they kept having kids because their cult have zero regards for women’s lives and health
The outright ignorance and denial is crazy to me. They themselves have been told they were advised by trained medical professionals to NOT have more children as it’s a risk to her life. This is public information. Do you think it would be better for her to keep risking her life having children and potentially leave her seven children motherless? Because that’s going to be the outcome if they continue to try.
Yeah, you are way too invested in this not to be connected to the Bates. Go away.
She doesn’t need a functioning leg for her husband to impregnate her again. And he will.
