‘Dangerously Obese’ Episode Ends Tragically as Participant Molly Passes Away Despite Weight Loss: What Happened After the Show?

Molly during her episode of ‘Dangerously Obese’…

The final moments of Wednesday’s episode of TLC‘s Dangerously Obese left viewers shocked, when it was revealed that the episode’s star, a woman named Molly McKie, ended up dying seven months after having weight loss surgery, despite losing 200 lbs.

The episode— which followed Molly as she desperately tried to bring her weight down from nearly 600 lbs. so she could have bariatric surgery. Molly’s family— which included her husband Sam McKie and their young son Hudson— supported Molly’s weight loss journey and cheered her on when she got to 535 lbs. and was cleared for the surgery. After the surgery, Molly lost 200 lbs. more, but tragedy struck seven months later.

At the end of the episode, it was revealed that Molly suffered cardiac arrest and died, despite the weight loss.

Her husband Sam tells the viewers that Molly “had been doing amazing” before her sudden death, and that Molly was finally able to play with Hudson.

“She was able to get on the floor with him and he loved every second of it,” Sam said. “He was so excited that he got to play with his mommy.”

Sam said that Molly had been hoping to use her college degree to help people but she unfortunately never had the chance to do so.

“This show is a standing legacy for her to be able to help people,” Sam added.

The Ashley has looked into what’s happened to Sam, Hudson and the rest of Molly’s family since her death. According to her obituary, Molly actually passed away on December 14, 2022 at the age of 28. She was due to graduate with her second college degree just days later.

Since the episode aired, Sam has remarried in March 2024 and his new wife appears to be helping to raise Hudson, who is now six.

Sam, Hudson and Sam’s new wife…

After the episode aired on Wednesday, Molly’s sister Sara took to Facebook to honor her.

“Miss you forever, especially tonight,” she wrote. “Your strength and perseverance was something incredible. So was your intellect. The most beautiful person I know, inside and out. I miss your quick-witted humor so much. I love you so much Molly and I can’t wait to laugh with you again one day.”

Sara is still part of Hudson and Sam’s life, but it is unknown if Molly’s other sister Courtney (who was less-than-supportive of Molly and sometimes downright cruel to her) is. Courtney— who is a Christian influencer— posted a prayer request on what would have been Molly’s 29th birthday in May 2023, asking friends to pray that her family “would be able” to see Hudson soon, insinuating that Hudson had been cut off from them.

Sara, Courtney and Molly during the episode…

In the comment section of the post, Sam responded to Courtney, writing, “Anyone is free to see Hudson any time. My mom can’t drive very far but y’all can come see him anytime.”

Courtney did not respond to Sam’s message.

  1. Watching that episode made me very upset I hate the outcome she deserved so much better & Courtney a hater she doesn’t deserve to see Hudson all she did was disrespect his mother .

    1. I was so sorry to hear that Molly passed way. She was such a sweet, loving young lady. She had a real love for people and would have done remarkable things. Her husband truly loved her.

Oh! Could not stand that Courtney! She seems familiar to me, but I just can’t place why.

  2. Not surprised a country singer would have a tainted view of Christianity.
They’re support of public figures who NEVER display Christian values, and quiet the opposite of Christianity, always blows my mind. From the show you can tell Molly was a special creation.I was shocking to hear the news, that she passed. Maybe the Lord said enough!
    Time to come home.

  3. Courtney was a condescending bitch. I believe she bullied molly all her life and was a major contributor of Molly’s weight. Courtney does not deserve to be near Hudson. She will only have negative things to say about his mother. Best to keep to Sara only.

  4. Saying you’re a Christian does NOT make you a Christian. A follower of Christ is a Christian and the Lord has expectations. So everyone saying their not suprised me either because MANY say their Christians and are not and Jesus warns he will tell these individuals depart from me I never knew you!!

  5. Did I read this right, that sister Courtney is a Christian Influencer? Nothing about her arrogance, over made-up l, flippant bullying toward Molly suggested she should be telling others about Christian living or behavior.
I’m a retired licensed therapist, knew in the first scene with the sisters that Molly and Sara were the good-hearted and genuine ones in the family.

  6. Shocked by the ending result. I’m not going to lie I didn’t think she would do it. I’m glad she did though. So sorry for her son, and her sister Sara. Hudson your mom is looking down on you ā¤ļø

    1. The sisters should have been supporting her from the beginning not insulting her. Glad Sara finely came around but as far as Courtney to me she appeared fake and appeared to want the focus/cameras on herself. R.I.H. Molly.

  7. I didn’t like Molly’s comment about food addiction beeing wors than drug addiction. Unless she was at one time a drug addict she had no rite comparing the two addictions. I was a food addict and a drug addict so the difference in the two dont even come close to one another. Drug addiction is definitely worse. So airing that comment on TV was terrible!

    1. You can live without drugs. Sure it’s hard once you’re addicted but you absolutely can quit drugs. You cannot just stop eating. You have to eat every day, you need to eat to live. Food addiction is 100% without a doubt harder than drug addiction. You clearly have not had actual food addiction if you say otherwise.

      1. ABSOLUTELY! you don’t have to monitor and limit your drugs like you have to with food. You have to stay completely away from drugs with food if you stay away, you die.

    2. the difference you dont have to take drugs everyday to survive, you do in fact have to eat food everyday to survive! So yes food addiction is worse!

  8. Last night, my mother and I both were very upset.
    We were routing for Molly.

Then when we read she died, we never would have watched it.

I am so sorry to her sister and Hudson.

  9. That’s sad, I hope the videos of her from the show give her son a piece of her to hold on to and remember her love for him.

  10. Gosh seeing that news at the end made me cry. I was really rooting for Molly. I’ve watched the 600 pound show w Dr Naz. He always told patients that they wouldn’t live long if they continued eating that way. None of them ever believed him and just went on eating. There were several deaths on his show too but they were always older than Molly. I don’t understand why her heart would give out so young, especially after losing 200lbs. I wished they had shown a video of the Dr sharing his views on Molly’s death. I couldn’t stand the mean sister. I hope she has deep regrets for the way she treated her sister. I have a sister just like her. They are inherently sad people who are unhappy with their lives. Her sister wanted to be a famous country singer but that never happened. My sister is the same way with her life’s goals not working. They can’t help but be mean to others to compensate for their own misery. Molly’s husband has a type, overweight blondes. Something tells me that their house is still messy. I hope this woman is a good mother to Hudson. He seemed like a very good boy.

  11. I was saddened to see Molly had passed away after 7 months of surgery and losing 200lbs. Kudos to the difficult battle. I cried and had to sit up in my bed and start praying šŸ™šŸ½. I feel the same pain as Molly because im the oldest and bigger than my 2 sisters. My prayers to her family especially her son.

  12. I was shocked and heartbroken after watching last night’s episode. Molly was a bright light and her love for her son and husband and sisters was so obvious. I mourn her even though I never met her. It seems so unfair, she was working on bettering herself in every way, and the fact that she already lost 200 pounds showed her dedication. So sad. 😢

  13. not surprised a ā€œchristianā€ influencer like courtney would act like that towards her sister and act like a victim after her death, shame on her! i’m glad it’s sam called her out and even if sara didn’t say anything it still shows sam is telling the truth! rip to molly ā¤ļø

  14. The episode was really sad. Molly said more than once that she really wanted to watch Hudson grow up. She was so young and was taking steps to be healthier.

I can’t stand Courtney she was so cruel to Molly. She took pleasure in it and it was awful to watch. I feel like Sara supported Molly.

I’m sure Molly, Hudson and Sara were devastated and shocked.šŸ’”
