“90 Day Fiance” fans are taking to social media in anger after watching Mido Fayed‘s “mean-spirited” (and downright bizarre) proposal to girlfriend Debby Rolando during Sunday’s episode.
While most fans called out Mido for tricking Debby and staging the cruel engagement scene, others slammed TLC for allowing the scene to air.
As fans are aware, 55-year-old Debby brought her 41-year-old Egyptian boyfriend Mido to New Orleans to start their lives together. However, the fact that Mido is an actor who is looking to make it big in the U.S. has concerned Debby’s loved ones. Also concerning are the couple’s frequent (and explosive) arguments, one of which became so serious that producers had to intervene.
Last week, fans watched Debby surprise Mido with a tour of a wedding chapel, which Debby booked in hopes of pushing Mido closer towards marriage. Mido, who was down on his luck after getting deferred from a talent agent, stayed quiet and disinterested during the tour.

At the end of the tour, Mido abruptly told her, “I think it’s time for me to go home.” This, of course, sent Debby into a spiral and the episode ended with her sobbing alone outside the venue, believing Mido was leaving her to go back to Egypt.
This week’s episode picked up where last week’s left off, with a distraught Debby crying outside of the chapel. Mido comes over to her and smiles as he sees her sobbing. After he asks her to turn around and she refuses, Mido cheerfully takes a ring box out of his man-bag and sets it on the ground. (Um?)
Mido then lets poor Debby bawl for several more minutes, as he hugs her.

Debby very clearly doesn’t want to be on-camera at the moment and keeps trying to hide her face but (naturally) the cameraman zooms in on her tear-stained face. She asks Mido where he’s going, only to turn around and see him down on one knee, holding the ring box.
“I got you!” he said, with a deranged smile on his face.
“I’m gonna kill you,” Debby tells him (through sobs), before joining him on the ground to hug and hit him while accepting the proposal.
Tale as old as time…

Debby repeated again that she was going to kill her now-fiancé, so he jokingly responded, “Okay, so I’m going back! Where’s my ticket?”
When asked why he decided to propose in that [absolutely insane] way, Mido explained, “I’ve been carrying the ring until I catch [her at] a good time, and I know Debby wants to know right now if we [will] go and [get married].”
“So, I was thinking about this good chance to surprise her,” he continued. “She [surprised] me, so I should surprise her.”

“Me and Debby, sometimes we see ups and downs, but I think the experience [helps] us to understand more things about each other,” Mido explained. “Now, I know that she is a good person and she [has] a good heart.”
“I mean, it’s perfect, it’s beautiful,” Debby said of the proposal. “Not exactly how I expected it, but nonetheless, it’s beautiful.”

“90 Day Fiance” fans are blasting Mido on social media for tricking Debby into thinking he’s leaving her before literally asking her to marry him.
“Mido is a psychopath,” one fan wrote on Reddit. “First, his ‘joke’ with whether or not he’s going to be on his flight and now this.” (At the beginning of this season, Mido went MIA after telling Debby over text that he might not get on his flight to come to the U.S., which of course made Debby panic. She only knew that he was joking when he showed up at the airport… several hours late.)
“He is a sadist. He obviously enjoys seeing her in devastating emotional pain and then plays with her emotions by turning it around but not until she’s really had a lot of time to really break down. […] TLC should be held responsible for this abusive behavior. […]
“I totally agree. This was meant to be cruel,” another fan commented.
“He’s all, ‘Ha, ha ha, I made you feel COMPLETELY DEVASTATED, I got you!’” one fan commented on Instagram. “Imagine telling her friends how he proposed? She should have said NO.”
“This is absolutely emotional abuse,” another person wrote. “He is emotionally abusing her and the producers should stop it. But they won’t.”

Obviously, Debby was unfazed by this backtracking proposal because less than a month later, the pair married in December 2025. Although the couple has been quiet on social media, court records indicate that they are still legally married.
“90 Day Fiance” airs Sundays on TLC. Watch a video of the proposal below.
