TLC is adding another weight-loss series to its schedule. Debuting Monday, Feb. 7, 1000-lb Best Friends follows four friends the network describes as “larger than life” on a “a journey of sisterhood, weight loss, and self-discovery.”

“The ratings success of 1000-lb Sisters has made one thing clear — our audience loves personal journeys of transformation featuring authentic, bold and very boisterous personalities, which is why we’re excited to introduce this brand-new series, ‘1000-lb Best Friends,'” Howard Lee, president of TLC Streaming and Network Originals, said in a press release. “This show is about weight loss and leading a healthier lifestyle just as much as it is about a tight-knit group of girlfriends that love to have a good time. By the end of the first episode, viewers will be asking themselves if their friend group has a Vannessa, a Meghan, a Tina or an Ashely.”

Vannessa and Meghan, friends since middle school, are reality-TV veterans, originally appearing on TLC’s Too Large. For the new series, they’re joined by friends Tina and Ashley in working toward reaching their weight-loss goals, some via surgery.

“From camping to swimming in the ocean, these friends are determined to get out of the sedentary habits that have led them to where they are now,” TLC wrote in a press release. “Whether it’s exercise, doctors’ appointments or therapy sessions, they’ll rely on each other to get through it all. But with four big personalities, they are bound to ruffle each other’s feathers. Will the gang be able to overcome their insecurities and self-doubt in time to attend their high school reunion as a fiercely fabulous, united front?”

The friends will also be featured on a digital midform series 1000-lb Best Friends: Behind the Episode, which will stream on discovery+ and TLCgo.

  1. How disingenuous of the production companies

It takes years and serious serious lifestyle changes to make any kind of lasting impact and these made for TV “quick fixes” are dangerous.

And yes, it’s a shame when being honest about a continuous life-long pattern of unhealthy decisions is frowned upon.

  2. I might get downvoted for this, but I wish they would stop these shows that glorify being morbidly obese. There’s a huge difference in a weight loss show, and then a reality tv show about weight loss. This type of show is not going to help lose weight and choose life. They need a serious medical/weight loss plan, with mental health and food help. Either that or they are going to have their lives cut short. Reality tv is not going to help.
