Amber Portwood hopped off of her couch onto TikTok Live Thursday to apologize to Catelynn Lowell and Maci Bookout for flipping them off on the platform earlier this week and implying that they’re no longer friends.
As The Ashley previously reported, Amber issued the double-bird insult to her Teen Mom co-stars on Tuesday after a fan in the Live chat pointed out that Maci and Cate have always stuck by Amber, unlike some of her other co-stars– namely Cheyenne Floyd and Jade Cline–, who recently criticized Amber’s treatment of teenage daughter Leah on the show. In response to the comment, Amber argued that Maci and Cate haven’t been good friends to her, before going on to flip off the camera.
While Maci never responded to Amber’s less-than-friendly hand gesture, Cate later shared her feelings about the situation in the comment section of TikTok creator @RealityTVwithRei‘s post about it. Cate seemed angered by Amber’s middle finger salute, and stated that Amber will be even more upset with her and Maci as this season of Teen Mom: The Next Chapter continues.
“Woahhh lol 😂 well I guess she’s gonna be big mad when she sees what me and Maci said to Leah later this season 🤷♀️🤷♀️,” Cate commented and later deleted. “Truth will always be truth and facts are facts!”
Despite Cate seemingly warning Amber of what’s to come this season, Amber returned to TikTok Live on Thursday to apologize to Cate and Maci for going “Portwood AF” on them on Monday, revealing to fans that her two co-stars are “pretty angry with me right now,” and that Cate had even reached out to her about the situation Wednesday night via text.
“ … Maci and Cate, to me, are women that I absolutely adore, OK?” Amber stated, before explaining why she was so angry with the two to begin with.
“ … Maci and Catelynn had came into town to see me [and] a certain person had lied to them about what I knew, which was a really horrific situation, and somebody told them that I knew about this horrific situation, so they thought to not bring it up to me because they thought it was going to hurt me … ,” she said. “You know, they just wanted to see their friend and that’s what Catelynn said last night.”
(The Ashley suspects that the “certain person” who “lied” is Amber’s baby daddy Gary Shirley, and the “horrific situation” that Cate and Maci assumed Amber knew about is the fact that Leah wants her stepmom Kristina to adopt her. During an on-camera visit to Indiana to see Amber, Maci and Cate also met up with Gary. During their visit, Cate and Maci told Gary they wanted to make sure that Amber knew about the adoption situation before it aired on the show. In response, Gary told Cate and Maci that Amber had “found out something” and confronted him about it.
“ … She called me and goes, ‘I’ve been hearing stuff,’” Gary said. “I don’t know what she heard exactly, but I know what it was.”
Gary went on to confirm to Cate and Maci during the episode that Amber did know about the adoption conversation, though later on, Cate and Maci agreed that they were still unsure if Amber was fully aware of everything.
During her TikTok Live on Thursday, Amber claimed that until this week, she was under the impression that Cate and Maci were “keeping a secret” from her, implying that was why the two had earned a spot on her s**t list.
“ … I thought, you know, you guys are my girls, you know, we’ve been doing this for so many years,” Amber said, insisting that if someone were to ever say something about either Cate or Maci, SHE would make sure they were aware. According to Amber, however, Cate and Maci “weren’t able to do that” for her because “a person lied to them.”
“They were lied to and I never knew that,” she said. “I just found that out last night from Cate, so now I feel horrible because, of course, [the] same person has to be in this dynamic to start this drama.
“So, I’m going to say right now, Cate and Maci, I’m so sorry, darlings, for flipping you off and doing that stuff,” Amber continued. “I did not know that you guys were lied to. I thought you were keeping a secret from me, and to be honest, I should’ve known better.”
While Amber noted again that her friends are “pissed” at her for what she did this week, she insisted that she loves them both.
“These are some strong women,” Amber said. “I don’t go against Maci and Cate like that … that was just a really horrible misunderstanding and also, another person that was involved who wanted to lie to the two girls I just adore the most on the show. Not even just this show, people that I really care about … .”
Gary has yet to respond to Amber’s (latest) accusations.

I mean Gary could’ve very well lied to Maci and Catelynn about what Amber knew/didn’t know about the adoption stuff. That being said- Amber lacks the wisdom in knowing she could’ve contacted them both privately to talk it out versus doing the usual on tiktok.
I do have to wonder what Maci and Cate said to her to make her actually apologize, whether it was genuine or not.
Also dumb question here from someone who has never used tiktok: Does Amber get paid anything to go on tiktok live and do this crap? Or is this just the typical attention seeking?
TikTok does pay, but it’s one of the lowest sm payouts one can get and requires more views/interactions than other outlets. It’s one of the biggest reasons there are so many ways to buy followers for TT versus other outlets which might have less resources for buying views/followers/subscribers. They all have resources, but TT has more because it generally requires a lot more to get a smaller payout. The fact that TT is far less restricted in content contributes heavily to why it pays less, though (and also contributes a great deal to a lot of the controversy that’s always surrounded it).

The problem, as always, is that Amber just reacts explosively and then has to rationalize her behavior when she’s called on it. It’s never her fault that she exploded – it’s that someone provoked her, lied about her, disrespected her, etc. She’s been acting like this for the past 16 years. So, this time it’s that Gary lied. Meanwhile, it’s been no secret that Leah wants Kristina to adopt her. We’ve known that for a long time.
