Former ‘Counting On’ Star Jason Duggar Says Some of His Siblings Regret Having Kids Immediately After Marriage; Reveals He & Wife Maddie Are Waiting to Start a Family

“Not sending baby announcements any time soon. Sorry Ma and Pa Duggar!”

Jason and Maddie Grace Duggar aren’t the typical Duggar couple.

In a video posted to their YouTube channel yesterday, the young couple answered follower questions about their relationship and plans to start their own family. Unlike many of Jason’s siblings, he and Maddie Grace, who married six months ago, are taking their time before having kids.

“We do not want to have kids for a while,” Maddie Grace said. “I love kids but I don’t want any right now, and I want to savor this and just get to know each other.”

“Maddie, you don’t want all these blessings?”

Jason’s own experience of being one of 19 kids has influenced their decision making.

“I do love that my parents, I think that their calling really was having all 19 kids, I really do believe that, and they’re such incredible parents, but for us, we also want to enjoy every stage that the Lord has us in,” he said. “We want to be able to travel too, travel around the world, do a bunch of things, and it’s tough to do that when you have kids.”

Jason then revealed that some of his siblings regret pumping out babies as soon as they got married.

“Even some of the couples in my family have said, ‘Hey, we wish that we maybe would have maybe waited a little bit, that way we could travel and do different things,’ and so that’s something we both really want to do,” Jason added.

“Just the two of us”

The pair traveled to Greece and Italy on their honeymoon and shared in the video that they’d like to return to Europe for their first anniversary. Jason said he’d also like to visit all 50 states and Israel with his wife.

Once the two are ready to have kids, they’re not interested in having as many kids as Jason’s parents did.

“I would say my max is six, and that’s pushing it,” Maddie Grace said. “I mean, we did get the question, ‘Do you guys want 19 kids?’ Absolutely not.”

Even though she has different plans for her own family, Maddie did express admiration for her mother-in-law, Michelle.

“That’s too many [kids] for me,” she said. “I think your mom is an absolute angel for being able to do that because I couldn’t.”

“An angel in a modest denim skirt! That’s me!”

Since becoming a couple, Jason and Maddie Grace have challenged many of the rules set in his conservative Christian upbringing. The pair admitted to dating, not courting, and even kissing before marriage in their YouTube video.

“Growing up in my family, that was against the rules, but for Maddie Grace and I, that’s not a conviction that we have,” Jason said. “I love my parents, I think they’re great people, but it’s a rule that we set for ourselves in our relationship, through dating and engagement, and it was something we were OK with.”

  1. No one forget it’s what Justin is doing right now too. Been married for 4 years now and yet…no blessings. I am excited for these kids, they were so brainwashed as kids and even a tiny step like this (I assume they are using birth control then which is a big ‘no-no’ in his family, esp for his parents) is a big step for them. Enjoy life and then have kids if you want to. I don’t see Jana being knocked up by Stephen soon either (despite her age, maybe she doesn’t even want any, who knows). And it all started with Jill having the courage to break the mould. Keep on breaking it, Duggar siblings, maybe one day someone will completely stray away from everything they have been thought. (Prob Jennifer or Jordyn)

  2. He can get away with this because he’s a man and that’s somewhat acceptable in his cult. Probably his brother (I don’t remember the name, the one that got married at 18 a few years ago) feels the same way because he doesn’t have kids yet.

  3. Good for them! I wish them many MANY adventures and full life experiences before they go down that road.
Get a chance to grow up, change, build a strong foundation together.
I’m surprisingly uplifted by reading that. More than I expected.

Also, Kudos to them for SAYING IT. Some fundamentalists are so scared to admit doing family planning(waiting), they let the rumor mill do the talking, let people assume fertility issues, and dance around the truth. Adding to the stress and pressure.
Jason’s got balls, and brains. I did not think any of the boys would so openly, publicly challenge the status quo, (very classy about it, too. Carefully, respectfully, yet firmly their own people.) we all have seen what happens there. Proud of the kid.

  4. Holy crap. A Duggar SON with an actual brain who broke somewhat away from his parents beliefs. I’m actually impressed. Usually I’m disgusted by Duggar posts. This was refreshing.

  5. Finally some smart Duggars. They shouldn’t have kids right away, because they are kids.Still, I mean, legally, they’re barely adults.
