Derick Dillard is taking some time off from lawyering.
A few weeks ago, Starcasm reported that the former Counting On star had left his job as an assistant district attorney for the State of Oklahoma’s 27th District and started his own law firm, based off of updates to Derick’s LinkedIn profile. Over the weekend, his wife Jill confirmed the news on social media, and revealed that Derick is putting his law career on hold while he takes a “sabbatical period.”
“Is Derick still working as a lawyer?” a follower asked Jill on Instagram, to which she replied in a Story, “Derick actually recently left his job of nearly 3 years (prosecuting attorney/ADA in Oklahoma) & is taking a sabbatical period for awhile working on some personal endeavors. A very welcome change of pace for all of us!!”
Derick graduated from the University of Arkansas School of Law, Fayetteville in 2021 and was sworn in as a licensed lawyer in both Arkansas and Oklahoma the following year, which is also when he became an assistant district attorney.
According to Jill, Derick covered a range of cases during his time as an ADA.
“While working in his most recent job as an ADA, he handled a wide variety of cases…mostly prosecuting criminals for the state of Oklahoma, but also handling civil & juvenile cases,” she shared in an Instagram Story.
Last year, news broke that Derick was representing the State of Oklahoma in the case against Tiger King star Joshua Dial on two counts of Domestic Abuse – Assault and Battery, and one count of Resisting An Officer, as The Ashley reported. That case is still in progress, with Joe Exotic’s former campaign manager next due to appear in court on May 19. Derick is still listed as the district attorney on the case details on the Oklahoma Supreme Court’s website.
While Jill didn’t provide details on what “personal endeavors” Derick is working on currently in lieu of lawyering, it appears that Derick is interested in going into private law practice. According to his LinkedIn account, Derick is listed as working for “Dillard Law” since February; however, a search of the Internet does not turn up any results for a law firm with that name associated with Derick.
Jill is currently a stay-at-home mom to the couple’s three sons: Israel, Samuel and Frederick.

Jill hasnt seem to be all that happy for some time now. Sadly if she is she will remain Mrs. Dillard.
Hope it works out. They seem to be creating a great family in their own way.
Makes sense. ADA’s get crap pay, even worse than teachers. It’s usually just a stepping stone to get some courtroom experience and most people leave after 2-5 years.
Agree!
