Maddie Brown recently opened up about her husband Caleb Brush‘s serious health issues.
During an Instagram Q&A session with fans over the weekend, the Sister Wives star revealed that Caleb— whom she married in 2016— has chronic kidney disease and, should his health decline further, may need a kidney transplant.
Maddie— who shares four kids with Caleb— was asked by a fan how they decided they were done having children. The ‘Sister Wives’ star responded that, although she still debates if she wants more kids, Caleb’s serious health issues were the reason they agreed not to have more kids.
“Caleb has chronic kidney disease, which, at times can be life-threatening,” she wrote. “This past Feb-May got REALLY dicey. Ultimately that is what made us decide to close that chapter [of having kids].
“Though if his health changed, I cannot guarantee I would not change my mind!”
As ‘Sister Wives’ fans know, Maddie comes from a very large family. Her dad Kody Brown has 18 kids total (six of which are with Maddie’s mom Janelle). Caleb also comes from a big family with lots of kids.
After Maddie revealed Caleb’s health issues, fans asked if he would need a kidney transplant.
“Not currently,” Maddie responded. “His kidneys function at 24% currently. When they drop to 20% we will be looking at transplant.”
Caleb has struggled with his health over the last decade. During a 2018 episode of ‘Sister Wives,’ it was revealed that he had a double pulmonary embolism. After the episode aired, Janelle wrote on X that it was a miracle he survived it.
“Caleb is a walking miracle – he had a double pulmonary embolism and survived,” she wrote. “It was such a scary time. The doctor said if he had gone home and gone to sleep he wouldn’t have woke back up.”

Maddie and Caleb and their kids live in North Carolina, as does Janelle and several of the Brown family adult kids. Maddie and her family have no relationship with Kody (or his only remaining wife Robyn), and haven’t for several years.

This is a huge deal. My family suffered kidney disease, I saw my uncle and grandpa suffer from it. My grandpa had dialysis and a transplant. It was kinda rough remembering it now. It’s a dangerous thing, I hope he is ok

He has all these health issues they’ve known about for a decade, yet she continued to bring four children into the world with him…And not to mention, he groomed her as a teen.
There are no guarantees in life. Extremely healthy people can and do die young every day. Nobody is promised tomorrow. So, if he doesn’t live long. At least they will remember him as a loving dad. When my birth father dies, I’ll remember he’s a pill popping loser. So…
So…people with health issues shouldn’t be allowed to as many kids as they and their partner would like?? Make that not sound discriminatory. Mind your beeswax.
