  1. As a survivor of a parent death by suicide, I appreciate the comments here advising unlimited understanding, patience and support for helping our mentally-ill family members, however I find the one-sidedness a bit hypocritical. Just as the ill person can’t really help feeling depressed, neither can the bereft family members they leave behind control their feelings, and telling them not to experience a feeling of anger or finding someone selfish for choosing/feeling they had no other choice but to leave them behind is naïve. Survivor feelings are just as valid, and anger is one of the stages of grief. We are allowed to feel our feelings, and you can feel yours too. All are okay; it’s our response to them that is important. 💜

  2. My brother and I lost a close friend due to suicide years ago, and we never thought, “oh poor us, he was so selfish because now we are left to be sad”. It’s always been “how could we have helped him? How can we help others in our lives who are feeling the same way? What are the warning signs? How can I be more supportive of those who are depressed?”

  3. Courtney is seriously so mentally messed up. I hope she has gotten better. Taking your life is no joke and it is very selfish. The results haven’t been released yet but my mom might have taken her own life the other day. She was in very bad health and also replaying the past over and over. Nothing is as bad as it seems. There is always hope. Think of your family before you try to carry out the act of suicide.

      1. Thank you. Of course it takes time. I moved myself and my famiy back in with my parents because my mom needed help with the housekeeping. She got worse mentally and was very bad the past couple weeks. I feel bad for getting angry with her. But she was on and on degrading us for no reason. I said she needed to be in a home or a hospital but it was too late. The night before she fought with everyone so no nice words were said from anyone before I found her the next day. It is not easy.

Please. If someone in your family needs help, help them.

    1. I agree with you but please don’t use the word selfish. If you have never experienced depression and suicidal thoughts, consider yourself lucky. If a person is feeling this way, so hopeless and down, calling them selfish is just fueling their fire. It’s very unnecessary and cruel, and quite anti productive to take that approach when trying to help someone who is struggling with depression. You should help, encourage, support those going through it, however you can. My close friend has been confiding in me that she is depressed, I set up a few job interviews for her (with her consent), set up a schedule where I could watch her daughter so she could have some alone time, and offered to watch her baby so she could go out with her husband. Sometimes you have to take matters into your own hands if the depressed person is having trouble getting started.

      1. For different people they can see it in a different way. I saw it as selfish because she didn’t think of what would happen to us after. Again, are waiting to see if that is what happened. It could have been health related. But either way we had to deal with the aftermath. The visual of seeing her like that. The police here for the whole day. It takes me a long time to go to sleep because I think non stop. We tried to help. We teied to help for a long time. But when someone goes their whole life not making any progress when others try their hardest. It is selfish. We are the ones questioning what else we really could have done. Death in the family isn’t the same for everyone.

I will tell you a little bit about mental illness. I am bipolar. I went a long time not knowing it. I would have constant rumination of how awful, ugly and unloveable I am. I would just have thoughts in my mind “kill yourself” “you would be better off dead than have to live this way.” It is a disease. Just like cancer is a disease. I will say, I wish people weren’t so afraid to seek help. I understand what you’re saying in the sense that your mother was “selfish” for not getting the help. Some People don’t realize how bad they are, because it’s normal to them. They think everyone feels “bad.” My aunt is mentally ill, probably bipolar. She refused help. She tormented her kids growing up. My cousin shot himself 10 days before his 19th bday. I will always be bitter over her not doing something about Her issues. There must have been times she knew what she was doing wasn’t ok. I understand your anger towards your mother. You are going through something horrific. It’s not like when a parent dies in a “normal” way. You are left to wonder how they really felt or loved their children. I hope you are able to find help and start to heal as much as you can. I see both sides as a mentally ill person and as someone who watched as someone did not get help and others suffered greatly.
