Controversial ‘Unexpected’ Star Jason Korpi Claims His Family with Kylen Smith “Changed” Him

“I’m different now! See? I lost the bandana and everything!”

Jason Korpi claims to be a changed man, but viewers who watched him on Unexpected are skeptical.

Earlier this month, Jason— who is arguably the most-hated person to come from the TLC reality show— posted a video to his rarely unused TikTok account, showing his girlfriend Kylen Smith and their two children. (As The Ashley previously reported, Jason and Kylen welcomed their second child— a daughter named Oakley— in October. They are also parents to son Xavier.)

In the first frame, Jason posted an old photo of himself, writing, “OMG I used to know him. He’s so…”

He then posted the family photo with a caption proclaiming that he’s no longer the person fans saw on ‘Unexpected.’

“You knew me for my irresponsible behavior and partying, before I found out the real meaning of life,” he wrote. “This family saved me…”

Fans will best remember Jason for the despicable way he treated Kylen while the couple was appearing on ‘Unexpected’ Season 5 to document her pregnancy with Xavier. Throughout the season, Jason had been criticized by viewers for controlling Kylen and keeping her away from her family (among other things.) However, things escalated to alarming new levels during the episode in which Kylen gave birth to Xavier, when viewers watched as Jason became verbally abusive to Kylen while she was in labor.

#NeverForget

First, Jason wouldn’t allow Kylen to have a hospital birth, insisting that she have a medication-free birth at home. When Kylen’s midwives demanded she go to the hospital because she was in distress, Jason threw a fit and waited to take his girlfriend there. Jason went on to forbid Kylen from getting an epidural to help with labor exhaustion (calling her a “drug addict” and “pu**y” for wanting one). He became so abusive that he was ultimately kicked out of the hospital.

His behavior was so outraging that fans started a petition to urge TLC to kick Jason off the show. That petition ended up getting over 14,000 signatures.

Jason’s bad behavior continued even after he became a father. In February 2022, Jason was arrested and charged with eleven crimes, including “Aggravated DUI” and “Disobeying an Officer.” In November of that year, Jason was found guilty of three of those charges, including DUI.

Since then, though, Jason has seemingly kept a low profile, legally (at least as far as The Ashley can tell).

While Jason is proclaiming that he’s a changed family man, many ‘Unexpected’ fans weren’t buying it. After Jason’s new video was posted to the ‘Unexpected’ forum on Reddit, fans sounded off on the unlikelihood that Jason was any different, or that he was treating Kylen any better.

“I’m sure he hasn’t changed. She still looks like she has no life in her eyes and he still looks like he’s smirking,” one person wrote.

“What a cop out!” another person commented. “He’s an abuser and he didn’t say abusive behavior. I’m sure he’s still doing the same. It’s not like people like him just suddenly change.”

“There. I’m all better now!”

“Calling how he behaved ‘irresponsible’ is a vile ass downplay of the horrific abuse he inflicted on her,” someone else wrote.

  1. Right, Right. The Partying and Irresponsible behavior are totally why we remember you and think poorly of you. Yeah. The dumb wild teenager shit. mmmhmm.
Certainly not the wildly out-of-control, severely abusive, controlling, coercive, dangerous, remorseless behaviors, No no! It’s obviously not those things!

  2. A d-bag doesn’t change it’s…whatever. That guy made my blood pressure go up. He was worse than Farrah from Teen Mom.

  3. I hate this guy. He’s a gaslighting douche bag. I rarely use the word “hate.” But this guy is just on a terrible level. The worst.

  4. I seriously doubt he’s changed. The very family he claims “saved” him is the same one he had back then except now there’s another baby, which usually brings more stress, not less, especially for someone like him. He was incredibly abusive to Kylen, his own parents, and even Kylen’s family when he allowed her to see them, always with him hovering around. If I remember right I believe her Dad was terminal and her mother was trying to take care of him. He still wouldn’t let her see her dying father. What a POS

I actually felt bad for his parents at one point. They were supporting Jason, Kylen, and the baby, and he was still nasty, ungrateful, and disrespectful. Then came the reunion, and his dad showed his true colors too. Instead of calling out Jason’s behavior, he joined in and both parents were laughing about it. Sadly, it just proves the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree in the Korpi family.

  5. Let’s pray for her and the kids’ sake he’s telling the truth but I certainly have my doubts 😑

  6. I pray he has changed but I very much doubt it’s true. They reminded me so much of my ex-husband and I (before things eventually escalated into severe physical abuse) that I had a hard time watching some of those episodes. People with that mentality rarely change, especially when they refuse to even admit that they were actual abusers to begin with. I felt so bad for Kylen and hope she one day finds the courage to leave. The way a man treats you while you’re pregnant, in labor, and during postpartum shows you everything you need to know about him.

  7. Yeah right. Maybe on a surface level he loves his kids but, a person who treats another person the way he treated his girlfriend on national television is NOT a person who changes drastically. Either you are a good person incapable of calling a pregnant teenager a drug addict when she wants an epidural, ORRR you’re a bad person who says exactly that. There’s no in between. Sorry!
