On the latest episode of the ‘Bad Examples’ podcast, Kail Lowry opened up about her estrangement from mom Suzi Irwin and how her mom’s struggles with substance abuse contributed to her turbulent childhood and, eventually, caused her to go no contact.
As ‘Teen Mom 2’ fans are likely aware, Kail has been estranged from Suzi for years due to Suzi’s alleged alcoholism and her history of choosing men over Kail. Although Suzi appeared in Kail’s episode of ’16 and Pregnant’ and in early episodes of ‘Teen Mom 2,’ Kail has been no contact with her mom for quite a while.
While discussing the events that ultimately led her to set firm boundaries with her mom, Kail revealed to podcast hosts Tracy DiMarco and Jessica Romano this week that she realized well before she was a teenager that her upbringing was not normal. Kail contributed this to the fact that she “bounced around so much” to different homes, despite Suzi maintaining physical custody of her. Kail also claimed that, aside from a period of time when she was in ninth grade, her mom was never sober.
“My mom, to this day, I don’t think is stable,” Kail said, before going on to describe her mom as “an alcoholic and other things.”
As the episode went on, Kail recalled riding the bus home from school every day with a “pit in [her] stomach,” unsure of what she’d be “walking into,” due to Suzi’s ongoing issues. Kail claimed that moments like this are what led her to set boundaries with her mom, who has only met two of Kail’s seven children.
“ … you get to a point that, when you become a mom, which I became a mom pretty young, I was like, I can’t live my life [like this],” she said.
While Kail said she doesn’t currently have her mom’s phone number and hasn’t seen her in person in nearly a decade, she recalls instances in the past when Suzi would call her while “f**ked up.” During one of those exchanges, Kail revealed that she offered to help her mom, despite their complicated past and estranged relationship.
“ … one time she called me and she was whispering, she said she was hiding in the closet … cause she’s married to an abusive person,” Kail said. “And I was like, ‘If you call me tomorrow and tell me that you still want me to come get you, I will come find you and get you.’ And then she never called again.
“So, it’s just like, you know, life is life-ing for her,” she added.
Though she acknowledged Suzi’s personal struggles, Kail insisted that maintaining contact with her mom was detrimental to her own mental health.
“Like, I can’t just sit around and let you call me whenever you’re f**ked up and I have to stop whatever I’m doing to help you, or to talk to you, or you’re going to yell at me for something,” she said. “It’s like, that’s not good for my mental health, so I had to just cut it off.”
Despite being estranged from her mom, Kail insisted this week that she still wishes Suzi “the best.”
“I hope one day she gets sober,” she added.

Chaos breeds chaos; it’s not like Kail is stable either with seven kids and four dads.
This is the one area where I really feel for Kail, because she had to grow up way too quickly and it has clearly stunted her emotionally. That doesn’t mean it’s okay that she has chosen to traumatize her children in her own way, though.
