Amber Portwood made some very bold claims while on TikTok Live earlier this week, some of which caused her to be accused of stolen valor after she claimed that she had once joined the Marines and was “about to ship out” but was ultimately not allowed to join due to her troubles with the law.
The Teen Mom star got into a spat with another TikTok user while on TikTok Live and the topic of military and America came up, due to the user’s name containing the phrase ‘American Mama.’ Amber proceeded to tell the person that she had once joined the Marines and was preparing to fight for America, just like her brother Shawn Portwood had done. However, the tale Amber told on TikTok Live varies greatly from the how the event was described by Amber herself in her 2022 book, So, You’re Crazy Too?

Amber, angered by the girl because of her name, first bragged about her brother’s service, then actually stated that she herself had joined the Marines (before she had gone to prison).
“I have a brother that served– twice— in actual combat Army, 2008. You have no clue what you’re speaking of! I joined the Marines, darling,” Amber said. “I joined the Marines! Did you know that honey? But you know why I couldn’t go? Because I was in too much trouble and they couldn’t get one thing down.
“So, who’s the American Mama here? Because I was going to go fight for my country!”
Amber stated that her reason for “joining the Marines” was to better herself like her brother had done.
“So you wanna laugh at me, laugh at me all you want. But that’s me. That’s the woman I am! I’ll fight for people, I’ll fight for myself and now I know how to do it the right way,” she said.
Later, Amber seemed to backtrack (a little bit) on her previous statement that she had joined the Marines Corp… but then doubled-down on her claims.
“Girl, I didn’t say I was in the military,” she told one person who accused her of stolen valor. “I said I signed up for the Marines and I was about to be shipped out, but they could not get one of my things down. That’s all that happened. I was the second girl in Anderson [Indiana] to ever go. My mom brought me, how about that?
“Oh yeah, baby, I went to join the Marines, honey,” she continued. “I was in that office, I signed— I did everything. They just couldn’t get one thing down and that’s the only reason I couldn’t go.”
She told the user that after signing “those papers” she was thinking that she was putting her life on the line to be a Marine.
“But I did. But not you!” Amber told the woman she was arguing with. “…My brother was begging me not to [join], for certain reasons I’m not going to say what it was…but my family was worried.”
The Ashley decided to consult Amber’s 2022 book, So, You’re Crazy Too? because it contained a description of Amber trying to join the Marines. According to the book, Amber went down to the military recruiting office after she had been sent to rehab in Malibu by MTV, but before she went to prison in 2012. She was still a heavy drug user at the time and had been hoping to join the military instead of going to drug court.
Here’s how Amber herself describes her attempt to join the Marines Corp.:
“At one point, I had an idea as to how I could maybe cure my drug addiction on my own,” Amber wrote in her book. “I decided I wanted to join the military like my brother. Before drug court officially began, my mom took me to the place where they did intake for the military, asked for forms to fill out to enlist in the Marines, and the woman at the front desk laughed at us.
“I don’t know if she recognized me from TV, or just took one look at all the legal troubles we listed on the application, but she said the military would not accept me and seemed confused as to why I would even want to enlist. So it was off to drug court for me.”
Amber’s description in her book— which states she filled out an application and was rejected before ever even getting past the front desk clerk— obviously varies greatly from the tale she told on TikTok stating she was “about to be shipped out” after joining the Marines.
Amber continued to argue with the TikTok user, later seemingly bragging that she walked away from ‘Next Chapter’ and gave up a lot of money in order to keep her “integrity.”
“Honey, when you find a girl from that show that walks away from almost $200 grand, please let me know,” Amber said. “And then you can tell me about integrity, family and love, k? Can you do that for me? Oh s**t, you can’t. You really can’t. Wanna know why you can’t? ‘Cause there’s not nobody else that’s ever did that. Nobody. Not one. That’s what I did!”
“It’s called family, my mental health, needing to love myself,” Amber continued. “Everything else comes first!”

Amber needs to make the transition from her adolescent doctor to a adult doctor.
I honestly think ambers family really need to step up, she is just reacting to every thing in such a unhinged way, I also think everyone following her on live needs to quit it, you are making a mentally unstable woman react for your entertainment, it’s not right
There is nothing her family can do, I don’t know what you expect from them. If we ignore the fact that they’re all as batshit crazy as she is, and have, vehemently, defended her behavior (even encouraged it at times) for years now, what, precisely, do you think they can do to “step up”? You can’t legally force someone to get help. You can’t have them committed. You can talk until you’re blue in the face (not that any of them would) but it’s highly unlikely to get you anywhere. Until or unless she’s ready to stop, there is nothing they can do. She’s not a direct physical harm to anyone, including herself, which is the ONLY point where someone can legally do anything at all.
Not everyone who follows her on her live streaming actually knows everything about her. Sure, we’d like to think the whole world knows as much about her as those of us who love these snark pages and such, but, the reality is, she’s not that well known (few of the TM franchise folks are) outside of people who read about/watch TM. It’s not the fault of the people interacting with her online, in the same way they interact with others, that she CHOOSES to make the choices she does. Is she mentally unstable? Absolutely, yet, it’s treatable and she chooses not to. But is a lot of it played up as well? Again, absolutely and that’s a conscious choice she makes.
Her next story will be “the military wouldn’t be able to handle me because I’d punch the drill sergeant in the face for yelling at me!”

I hardly listen to Her lives it so happen I was on that night let me see what she say in begin she ok. Then she start omg here the lies come. My father , grandfather cousins uncles you know I had a very military family background, and I cannot watch somebody lie. All she had to say look I didn’t qualify, people don’t qualify for a lot of things going into the military I tried to go in it my back, eye and ADHD. Back then they didn’t take ADHD Kids they were very strict back then. Now they let a lot.
It all depends on the need – during the Surge in the late 2000’s, they were desperate to pump up numbers, so they took anyone. When I joined in 2011 however, they had become super strict. But yes, typically they won’t take anyone with a history of drug use (which is why many recruits lie about it, unless they have charges, which Amber did).
I’ve helped friends study for the ASVAB. With the problems she had getting her GED, ain’t no way in hell she’d get into the military. She definitely wouldn’t pass the physical. She’d probably die in basic. And the military won’t take anyone with severe mental health issues. That’s too much of a liability. I’m guessing she thinks because she signed up, that’s the same as joining? But I’d consider taking your oath after recruitment the point of “joining”.

Yeah exactly. You don’t “join” until you take your second oath the night before you ship to basic.
Depends on the time period people join, and how much they need recruits, so at times they let anyone in, and the recruiters just have them lie on their forms when they join. Other times, they are very strict.
I joined the Army in 2011 (sounds like around the time Amber tried to join the Marines), and by that point, they were pretty strict because they had enough recruits (due to the Recession). I had to lie about having braces and chickenpox as a kid because apparently that was disqualified me lol. I was in for 11 years.
My recruiter also changed my paperwork after I shipped out, to say I never had any speeding tickets (he thought this would disqualify me)…he got caught later on.
It’s a blessing for Amber she didn’t even get as far as MEPS. It’s an automatic dishonorable discharge for any drug offenses while in service, assuming she could have even made it through basic training….
We all know she’s incredibly out of shape, severely mentally ill, has a loud mouth, is violent, and has substance abuse issues.
I would like to know if Nathan’s alcoholism started before or after his military career? Is that when his criminal history started?
I’m fairly certain (I could be wrong though) that almost all of his issues started after he got out, and nearly all of them stemmed from his PTSD and issues with brain damage. I’m also fairly certain there’s a record of this, which is likely where I read it some time back.
He may have had some minor issues beforehand, but it’s pretty unlikely, considering he was in the military at a time when any of the issues he has had would’ve made him ineligible on the application alone.
Perfect for the Army! Lol. I was in for 11 years and we had many female recruits in basic like Amber who would try to fight people. She either would have had to shape up and adapt, or be kicked out. She likely would not have lasted long or she would have had a really rough time.
Also, by no means am I sticking up for her, but we had many recruits who were overweight or out of shape when they arrived at basic. The drill sergeants would whip them into shape. If they failed to pass weight or their PT test by graduation, they were sent to “fat camp”, but that was rare. If they put some effort into it, the drill sergeants would help them. I doubt Amber would have the mental resilience to do so.
Not at all shocked criminal charges and previous drug use disqualified her from joining. That happened to my cousin as well. She also would have likely tested positive for all the drug tests you have to take before and during basic.
They wouldn’t let her bring her couch or bed, she’s so delusional.

She likely was blocked due to drug use and legal issues. There were actually quite a few recruits who were Amber’s size when they arrived at my basic training. They either got into shape while there, or they didn’t. There’s A LOT of cardio in basic and restricted food (no couches either lol), so it wouldn’t have been hard to do if she was determined.
