Former ‘Dance Moms’ Star JoJo Siwa Chops Her Signature Ponytail Into a Super-Short Cropped ‘Do

This is a big day for JoJo… and an even bigger day for JoJo’s hairline.

File this under: Things we shouldn’t care about but kind of do…

JoJo Siwa’s days of rocking massive bows and a painfully tight ponytail are behind her.

The former Dance Moms star took to social media Thursday to debut her new–- and much shorter–- hairdo with a photo she captioned, “HAPPPPPY.”

JoJo didn’t just cut off her ponytail; she also opted for a super-short ‘do that’s long on top and cropped nearly to the scalp on the sides.

“I’m still learning how to do it,” JoJo said on Instagram Stories on Thursday. “It’s way different from long hair. It’s crazy!”

JoJo teased the drastic hair chop on Instagram a day before, though she waited until Thursday to share the final result.

JoJo has worn her hair in a ponytail for years, even turning her signature bow-and-pony look into a lucrative hairbow business. She showed her fans what was left of her signature ponytail after the massive haircut.

JoJo’s big chop was met with a mix of responses, with many congratulating JoJo for being her “authentic self.” Others were not so thrilled with the new look.

“What is this karen gay haircut girlll,” one person wrote in the comments of her Instagram post.

“You just BROKE EVERY YOUNG GIRLS HEART,” another person wrote. “The hair and your big bows was everything for young girls. It looks cute but JOJO will never be the same.”

“God may forgive u for being gay but NO ONE is gonna forgive u for that haircut,” someone else wrote.

JoJo’s new look comes less than a year after the teen made history as the first individual to compete with a same-sex dance partner on Dancing with the Stars. JoJo and her dance partner, Jenna Johnson, made it to the Season 30 finale, taking home second place.

As The Ashley previously reported, JoJo kicked off 2021 by officially coming out as a member of the LGBTQ community.

JoJo posted a photo of herself on Twitter in January 2021 wearing a shirt that read “Best. Gay. Cousin. Ever,” telling fans the shirt was a gift from her cousin.

Days later, she shared a video on social media confirming what many were speculating, telling fans she has “never, ever been this happy before and it feels really awesome.”

JoJo later revealed that she was in a relationship with Kylie Prew, whom she often posted photos with on social media. Kylie and JoJo went on to breakup in October, and according to E! News, JoJo has been dating someone new for “a few months.”

“I’m very, very happy,” she said.

  1. It’s way healthier for her hair this way. The pulling it into a ponytail was giving her alopecia

    1. Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disorder that causes your hair to come out, often in clumps the size and shape of a quarter. (Copied from Webmd)

Wearing a tight ponytail does not give you alopecia.

      1. Yes, it actually does. Traction alopecia is caused by pulling your hair or wearing tight ponytails for any extended time…

  2. Good for her!! Do people expect her to sport the ponytail and bows forever? I think letting girls know it’s ok to be yourself is much better than sporting a hairstyle homophobic moms want her to keep.

  3. She looks great! She looks so happy and I do love that cut on her. Kind of jealous bc I know I couldn’t rock it like her.

  4. This is normal ypung adult rite of passage especially when you want to separate from being a child.

Not sure what it will do for the bow brand but it’s GOT to be healthier than that god awful tight pig tail.

If she likes it thats all that matters

      1. People who read this article plus all the comments and then take time to reply obviously care in some way…

  5. At 18 it’s about time to take the humongous bows out of her hair. Hopefully she can now stop dressing like a human rainbow. 🌈

    1. Why does what someone else wears affect you so much that you had to hop on a website and yell about it?
If it makes HER happy and makes HER feel good, who cares what YOU think about it?

Lighten up and do some research on body sovereignty.

      1. Do you think she made the choice to dress like a human rainbow or maybe it was the people who brand her that tell her what to wear? I think it’s the latter. And the first commenter was not yelling… this is a forum to express opinions, not attack others for their thoughts. Perhaps you need a break from the internet for the day since someone hating on a ponytail is “affecting” you so much. Just a thought. Cause I personally think JoJo needs to drop the brand that they’ve created for her and let her be herself for once. The bright colors and super hyper personality they’ve created has got to be annoying to perform after awhile. Because clearly, it’s for the brand.

        1. I’m sure Claire’s will still sell regular bows that aren’t JoJo bows and the world will not implode.

Time to find a new brand, a new product to push as a young adult.

They had to know this child bow thing wasn’t going to be forever, right?
